V70 XC 2001 - Tailgate open message

Post by jimmyplimp »

I have a tailgate open warning and the rear compartment light stays on even when the tailgate is completely closed. I have opened the tail gate and activated the latch mechanism into the closed position with a scredriver and the warning goes away and the light in the rear compartment goes off.

But when I re-open the latch and close the tailgate the warning comes on and the light in the rear compartment stays on.
It appears the latch works fine when activated in the up position, but when you close the tailgate, ti does not seem to turn off
the warning.

Does anyone have an idea on what may be causing this?

Thanks, Jim

Jim: Sounds to me like the tail gate is not actually closing all the way (lock not closing fully onto
the striker/bar). I believe the locking set-up is the same on my '99 V70 and, if so, is pretty easy to
adjust. Remove bottom facing strip around the striker and up the sides and you can access the bolts.
Mine are torx #?? (can't remember the size). Loosen the bar very slightly and see if that works. Just
don't overdo it where the tailgate rattles. Good luck.

Or the lock is shorted out internally, quite common

I tried what chili 75 suggested and after a few adjustments the warning went off. Now, after a few weeks, the warning came on again. I have adjusted it several times and no luck. So, I checked the lock with a screwdriver in the open position and this did not turn off the warning on the dash board like it did last time. I called Volvo and they think the latch warning connection was failing and the adjustment of the strike plate and bar helped to make it work and now the connection in the latch has failed completely. A new latch is $184 so I would rather just deactivate the switch that says the hatch is open when it is not.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks, Jim

Jim: Was rechecking 'tailgate open' posts as my warning light is now on constantly altho tailgate is securely closed.
I suspect the lock internal connections as mine came on when I hit a hard bump.
My primary reason for this post though is to point out that the alarm system will not activate/arm with that warning
light on - at least mine won't. To me this makes sense but is it peculiar to my car?
Thanks, Bill

Could be a fuse under the hood in the fuse box on the driver's side by the windshield that has Torx Screws on the cover. The Door Chime and Trunk Light would not go out on my car and it turned out to be a blown fuse. Does not hurt to take a look!
