Front strut noise

LOL, the airbag is actually in the side of the seat. I deployed one a few weeks ago.

Here is the tube to know if you have a turbo (the tubes with the red lines):

As for if you have a V70, the V stands for versatile, if it's a wagon, it's the V70 if it's not a wagon it's a S70.

Just to let you know, a turbo is a safety feature.

At 100K or so other suspension components and those within the strut assembly may be worn also. Consider replacing the entire strut assembly on both sides if one strut is out. It may be more cost effective parts and labor wise than for your mechanic to take things apart and rebuild the assembly with new and used parts. You can do this yourself as it is fairly easy. If ya want to come up to Kingman AZ I am about to do the spring seats and struts on our 98 v70xc.

Is the V70 XC the same thing as the V70 AWD in 98? If it is you can also use the Gabriel's. The fronts and rears seem to be the same for all models in 98. It it easy at that point to replace front or rear and you won't need any of us

The front is. The rear has a totally different setup on XCs with no delta link setup and self-leveling Nivomat shocks.

I am getting ready to bite the bullet and buy the struts for this project.
I would like you guys opinion though. The noise I have is a pinging or hammering sound at low speeds. Metal on metal. Turning one way or another doesn't seem to make a difference. Neither does engine load or braking. Does that still sound like a strut mount? The passenger side strut mount is loose so it will need to be replaced either way....

As far as the metal on metal noise, I was experiencing that as well. I changed out the lower right engine mount (avatar photo) and found that to be the source of that noise, as well as hammering feeling over bumps. My passengers upper strut mount/spring seat needs replacing as well, but the engine mount was a great start. It is also a pretty simple procedure. I've seen some good writeups.

So you guys think it is the motor mount vs the strut mount? There really is no certain condition that induces the noise. At low speeds it hammers. It gets worse till 25+ and then goes away. I really don't think it goes away it just changes to a less annoying noise....I know I need the upper rear motor mount. I suspect that contributes to the hammering if it's not the cause.

Both MAY be an issue, but the strut mount is definitely bad.

As far as replacing struts - how does it ride? Does it feel like it stumbles over bumps and floats a lot on the highway? If not, the struts are probably OK - but you're removing the entire thing anyway. So - if you have the money - go for replacing both of them, as you'll need an alignment anyway!

My strut mount was more of a knocking/tapping noise at low speed.
