Auto Trans only shifts to N or D.

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Auto Trans only shifts to N or D.

Post by clw »

S80, 2005, autmatic transmission. Shifter will only go into Neutral or Drive. Will not go to Park, Reverse, etc. I have lifted console & removed ink pens & change that have fallen through openings in the center console. Still unable to get shifter to shift into park, reverse. Unable to remove key from ignition & i have removed the negative lead from the battery to keep it from draining the battery since dash lights stay on.

Unable to remove shifter knob as well to make access easier to see if there is something else blocking the shifter.

In the past I removed a ink pen & all was well. This time it is not so obvious. Please assist. Thank you.

The shiftlock blocks reverse position. That means it keeps you from getting out of park and it also means you can't go into reverse, or worse, Park when it blocks. The solenoid blocks when not energized and must be powered to move out of locked position.
The fuse could be blown. The Gear Selector Module (the panel around shifter where the gear positions are shown and has the W button) is the device controlling the lock solenoid.
There is limited access to the solenoid and linkage by sliding the console side panels off and doing what you can from the side.
