We bought a lemon. It is unfortunate, but it's true.
Let me start with "us." My lovely lady friend and I were looking for good first car for her to drive. Those old Volvos are good cars, safe, reliable, comfortable. After months of searching and test driving we found a beautiful little piece, a 1984 244 GL, 172,000 miles, it is in MINT condition. Really, this car is beautiful, you would never believe that the front seat had been sat in for 170+ and nearly 30 years, just impecable. Aparently a little old couple took it into the shop one day because they found it in their garage after many years and decided to run it on all the old fluids and fuel... old people, gotta love 'em. The shop goes through and replaces the fuel lines, pumps, filters, one injector, fluids, and the exhaust system. The car was finally running again but the bill was too steep, so they gave the shop the title and it became their problem. Enter us.
It is perfect, like a brand new car, but it just arived via a flux-capacitor. What was it that your momma told you about something being to good to be true? One week later... the brakes are bad, the engine is knocking on the bottom, tapping on the top, the transmission won't shift into Over-drive.
We are frustrated, and giggling about our new mess. Looking to make some volvo lemonade. We'll see you on the help boards, we wish you all the best in your volvo experiences as we are resolute to enjoy ours.
hooowee, we got a deal, a steal... if you like fixing cars

Ugh, sounds like the nightmare my first car (a 1988 Honda Accord LX) was.
It was in great shape - inside and out - but a piece of crap under the hood. The engine was great - it always ran great, but EVERYTHING else broke. Transmission twice, alternator, power steering, fuel pump, brakes multiple times...you name it...
Good luck!

Put these in and if it does not get rid of the knock and improve the overdrive you are in trouble. Not snake oil but pretty close! Friend stored his Big Benz for over 4 years as it could not pass CA smog. Put in the 306 and 503 and drove a couple hundred miles and it passed on the first try.240Lemonade wrote:We bought a lemon. Welcome and congrats on the "new" car. I feel your pain. Bought myself an 850 wagon that's beautiful inside and out. Haven't driven it even 300 miles since I bought it two months ago, thanks to transmission problems. I'm breaking down and taking it in to a shop next week, after the fixes we've tried haven't helped at all.
I'm sure once you get your car sorted, you'll have miles and miles of worry free travels. 240's are great cars. I would have looked for one myself, but I wanted a car with front wheel drive.
