Pressure when removing gas cap

Pressure when removing gas cap

Hello, does anyone know why when I remove my gas cap it hisses at me? Pretty scary :shock:

I think it does that with all cars. Just releasing pressure and it probably is worst during warmer weather. If you have a plastic gas container sitting in your garage it will be under greater pressure on hot days than cold and whoosh hiss at you when you open the cap.

Next time after fill up open it when you get home, at 3/4 tank, 1/2, 1/4 and when it is very, very low - use your computer 25 miles or so before empty. I believe if you open it with the tank very, very low on fuel it will not do so otherwise it should make noise all other occasions. Now that you've noticed it will seem more pronounced than before.

My '97 960 started doing the same. And when I say it 'started', I mean - it was not doing it before, so it
s not 'normal'. Also I notice issues with the engine performance when the excessive pressure/vacuum accumulates in the tank - the engive starts to misfire. My guess is that it's getting flooded/starved, but have not investigated so far. Wanted to see if anyone has dealt with this before I dig in myself. Thanks!

I think you'll find a problem with the evaporative emission system.
