timing issue, camshaft pully removed
How do I correctly align the cam pulleys onto the cams. After they have been removed without being marked.

There is a special tool that secures the opposite ends of the cams in the proper location. Then the sprockets are installed with the indexing marks lined up. I'm not sure, but there may be variations of the tool depending on which engine you have.

You can line up the exhaust and intake cams with the following photos. You will have one of the sprockets with a bolt at the top and the other with two bolts at the top.
I have aligned 5 cylinder heads with this method and while trickier when tightening the sprocket bolts (you'll need 2 10mm spanners to hold them still while tightening the 3rd with another)
I've always achieved good results and though while I'd rather have the alignment tools I've been spending big on other things like engine hoists, stands, scanner tools and general maintenance.

You have to take the black plug off the back end of head and the camshaft sensor and its reluctor piece of the back of the other cam to see those back ends of cams.
The alignment of cams is to coincide with the crank marking being aligned with oil pump pointer line.

They're from the Tracy's True Soaps Head Gasket tutorial
