Hey all,
I am looking to purchase a 01 s60 from a family member. As of now the dim is out as confirmed by the local dealership diagnostic test done today. I have researched the forum and came across the xemodex remanufacture cure. MY wife took the car in and they said they would put a new one in at the cost of $1700. She told them I was thinking of getting it done outside the dealership and they strongly urged her not to, saying the software would not connect back up and they would have to put a new one in anyway. There seems to be good feedback concerning xemodex fix. I guess I am just looking for some confirmation that this is the right path to try at a fraction of the cost. Any feedback is greatly appreciated - Thanks in advance!

That's typical dealer BS. The Xemodex fix preserves the software state of the DIM, including features like the trip computer if so equipped. Here is the link to their page on the subject (http://xemodex.com/technologyimproved/a ... -for-volvo).
You can also do a used DIM as long as the four ID numbers on the back match up. Typically, it has to come from the same model year but can be one from an S80, V70, or XC as well as an S60. Pretty much plug and play with some caveats concerning what mileage is shown. In my case, it took the higher of the two values held in the used DIM and the CEM which resulted in my car now showing 80K mms more than it should but considering how many are on it anyway, no big deal really. I also lost my trip computer because that optional software is stored within the firmware of the DIM. But this can be re-loaded by a dealer VIDA.
In both cases, it is possible that the SRS light will need to be reset which can be done by anyone with a VIDA/DICE or any capable OBD2 tool.
DO NOT FALL for the dealer's "advice"! At $1700 a DIM is nearly the value of your car. There are 2 much cheaper options. Xemodex at $400 or used at somewhere between about $75 and $200.
Good Luck,
Bill

I bought a used DIM for my 03 V70 from Southern Vovo:
http://southernvovo.com/index.html
888-757-8686
It cost me $115 total including shipping, 6 mos warranty, and free return shipping if it had a problem. (This was several months ago) I'd do it again in a heartbeat, over either the Xemodex option or the dealer ransom.
As BillR99 says, there are a couple of caveats:
1.) In my case the displayed mileage was that of the donor car DIM (55,000 miles), not what my car actually had (150,000 miles).
2.) DON'T START THE CAR WHEN THERE IS NO DIM PLUGGED IN, and you may just avoid setting off the SRS warning light. I boo-boo'd on this one and ended up having to take it to my local independant Volvo mechanic that has VIDA/DICE and giving him $30 to clear the message. However, if the current DIM is completely dead, then I'm guessing that an SRS message on the new DIM can't be avoided anyway.
Good luck!

**Update** Sent the DIM to Xemodex and received it back yesterday - took about a week with the cheapest shipping option. Hooked it up and is now back to normal. Total with shipping was @ $425 compared to the $1700 the dealership quoted. Only thing left to do is take it to the same dealership, unfortunately our only option, to have the SRS Airbag code reset.
The dealer charges about $100 for turning that pesky SRS light out.park1013 wrote:Only thing left to do is take it to the same dealership, unfortunately our only option, to have the SRS Airbag code reset.
Invest another $50 and get yourself a chinese vida/dice setup that will last a lifetime and can turn the SRS light off and do a million other things

To jda2000,
Is there a link to a good "chinese vida/dice setup"?

Try alibaba.com for vida/dice setup.
vida/dice is what the dealer uses to communicate with the car, the only thing the chinese knock off can not due is download software. It is compatible with all volvos, '96 and newer that are OBD II compliant.
