Whining or howling noise from engine

Thanks, I like your suggestion. Though it doesn't seem like it could cause such a steady, loud noise, I'll give it a try and post back.

Since removing the belt does nothing, I'm heading towards a defective replacement water pump

Idler pulley, did it seem ok? Or is it getting stressed by the other new items?

Motor mount idea seems unlikely. Wrong kind of sound. But prove me wrong!

A pulley on the timing belt though ... good thought. And worth checking out at once, you don't want that to fail.

Well...jacking up the engine didn't make the least difference. I poked and prodded from underneath while it was running and couldn't get the sound to change/stop. If I had to pinpoint a location I'd say it is coming from the area of the thermostat. Before I replaced my leaking radiator there were times when I ran very low on water. Could that be it?

I'm still trying to sort out the cause of this noise, it seems to be getting a little louder.
Listen closely to the "scrunch" sound as the engine stops... any new ideas?
