Struts--are the top-of-the-line Monroe ones OK?

Post by StephenD »

I got two quotes--one for $700 to install two front Volvo factory struts on my '93 850GLT with 100k miles and then $350 to have Midas put on Monroe's lifetime guranteed struts. Anyone have experience they'd like to impart?
Thanks,

ok here's the thing....
monroes are actually fine. i have two 850's one with monroe the other with boge(orig volvo). i like the monroe's better because it seems to be smoother and less sporty...maybe i'm just getting older.

that's not the issue. more often than not, the RUBBER mounts for the struts go bad i.e. the metal center comes off the rubber mount and you get the loud thumps. there is also the metal bracket the rubber mount goes into that often goes bad as well i.e. the rotating rubber insert gets 'squeeky'. both of which makes the car feel cheap.

my guess is the midas guys will reuse the old mounts (not good because you will be back in their shop complaining of thumps or squeeks, they will then say that nothing is wrong with the struts so anything else is not covered i.e. you pay again). the volvo guys will most likely not reuse those mounts. obviously the price difference is great so it is up to you.

my suggestion is to do it yourself. it is not hard. the most expensive tool to get will be a spring compressor. $30.
so do it yourself using new mounts and you will be happy.
btw, i have one rubber mount extra that i did not need. let me know if you decide you need one.
