Removing glass

Post by MadeInJapan »

I usually don't post questions, but I need your help. As some of you may know my car was hit while I was indoors at my place of work and a couple of weeks ago. This ruined the rear door on the driver's side. The replacement door came today and it worked out great! However, the glass that was in the door is not tinted like the rest of my windows. I would like to take the glass out of my original door (has the right tint) but I can't figure it out. The instructions on all x70 (S/V/XC/C) rear door glass removal instructions in VADIS is incorrect and shows an 850 door...says to remove the three screw on the bottom of the door...there are no 3 screws...it also shows a crank handle. My door has the electric window motor. Does anyone know what I have to do to get this piece of glass out. If I can figure it out on this door I'll be able to do it on the new door and just swap out the glass. Thanks for your help ahead of time.

Dave, in VADIS, go to:
  • Group 8

    (Left-hand nav pane:)
  • Repair and installation Instructions
  • Removal, replacement and installation

    (Right-hand nav pane:)
  • 83 Doors and Lids
  • Side windows
  • Replacing the rear door side window
This contains the correct information for our cars (I used the '99 MY, but would think it's there for your '98 as well). The information contained in "Exterior trim, glass, weatherstrips" is wrong (it is for 850s), no idea why.

Thank you! I found it...sometimes VADIS is hard to navigate.
One of my problems was that I already had this door out of the car with the window all the way up and instructions call for it to be down 1/4 of the way. I did this with an old battery I had sitting around (still enough juice!) and some jumper wires.
It won't be long now to get this glass out and into the other door.

So the window is out... Just curious, what did you do with the aluminum pieces that were glued to the window when you put a new one in? ...maybe the new window came with that and the green plastic rollers that are in it? I broke one of my green rollers (slightly) getting the ball out of it. Seems more hassle that it's worth- might just get the window that's already in the car tinted and not worry about it.

Hi,
I have the exact same issue except I do not have a copy of VADIS. Could you tell me how to remove the glass? It seems to be glued to the aluminium channels so I presume I must remove the channels from the green rollers. How do I do this? I had a look yesterday but didn't want to risk breaking it without knowing the full story.
Thanks.
