Hi,
I am considering buying my first used Volvo. Can anyone tell me approximately how many miles one can expect to put on a Volvo sedan before it needs major repairs? I know with Hondas, with regular maintenance, they can generally be expected to go at least 200,000 miles as a lifespan with little or no repairs. How far can Volvos be expected to go on average?
Thank you.
Thank you for your detailed response. For those of us who are not mechanically inclined, roughly what do those smaller repairs run (in US $) that begin to occur for Volvos over 100,000 miles if we are unable to personally make the repairs ourselves?

Mechanically, these cars are tough as nails - in my opinion, they'll hold up better than Hondas in the long run (I owned one and my parents have had 2 - they start to show their age in the body/interior before too long). The 5-cylinder engine family are some of the toughest engines I have ever seen. Mine has 220,000 and still runs like it has half that mileage.
The interior and exterior also hold up well. It just depends if the small problems associated with a car over 100K (suspension, electrical issues) drive you crazy before then. If you are able to learn and fix these things yourself, you will save a TON of money. That's what the forum is here for.
