Exhaust rattle on 850

Post by SHAKIBOXCARJOE »

when my car is completely stopped and i start to go, something in my exhaust starts to make a rattle sound (i think it might be the catylitic converter) and and ifi wanted to know if anyone has had the same problems it is anything to worry about. The rattle goes away when i get around 15mph and nothing is loose in the exhaust system.
thanks

Your rattle sounds like a heat shield. There are a couple of them - one is above the catalytic converter and the other one is toward the rear of the car near the gas tank.

My son's 850 had a rattle at the shield around the gas tank and all I had to do to shut it up was put a big hose clamp around it to re-secure it to the exhaust pipe.

Sorry to bring up an old thread - I just got my 850 (96' sedan base) repaired after having a flat tire and sitting in the driveway for about two months. Got the tire replaced after driving on the spare to the store, and everything was good. After starting the car about 7 hrs after the new tire, as the car is started there's a harsh metal on metal rattle that dies out after about a second. When the car is idling it can also be heard. When I pushed up on the exhaust, the noise seemed to stop. I see here about the heat shield being loose, but I'm 17 and this is my first car, so I'm not sure what the piece looks like. Also, I just read something about the heat shield having a recall. A little help would be nice :D

Hi. I had a rattling on my s70 t5 and I just got it fixed today. The mount that holds exhaust near the tip was loose and nearly broken. I got it welded and now the sound is totally gone.

What you can try is that when the car is started but in park if it makes any rattling at that time, push the tip of the exhaust with your hand or foot upwards. If the noise disappears then it is probably what I told you.

Cheers!

It's funny that you say that - that was the first thing I pushed up on and the sound was nearly gone, although a lot of force was put on it. I believe I know what you're talking about for the mount. It's about a foot back, and connected to two pieces that are mounted on the underbody. Mine seems to be coming apart.

Yeah exactly. It erodes and eventually it breaks of. Luckily i have a good mechanic who changed my front tires and did the welding for only 35 dollars :).

Update: I have an error code for the accelerometer, so I was under the car a few days ago. Went to check out the rattle and noticed a piece of sheet metal hanging off the exhaust. I was able to remove the entire heat shield with no effort, as it wasn't attached to any of the four mount points. I am unaware of the bolt sizes (all are missing) and how to remount the shield w/o the removing the exhaust.
