Do you have a failing Electronic Throttle Module? What steps to take if you do, plus the latest ETM news. Volvo 1999-2002 models only please.

Thanks everyone!

Well, I feel like an idiot, my ETM is not a XeMODeX, it's a Magneti Marelli ETM or at least that is what is engraved on the outside. Ugh. Is it possible for Magneti Marelli ETMs to fail in 7 months? I don't drive that much at all, just to school and on errands; no long-distance trips or freeway driving. My 1999 S70 only has 99,000 miles on it. I really want a mechanic to perform an ETM test on my car, and I am upset that nobody has ever performed this test on my car before because it just seems like common sense...is it possible that the mechanics simply could not perform the ETM test because my car does not store any codes?

Are Volvo mechanics totally dependent on the computer, and can't do anything "mechanical" to find the problem, especially the most common problem amongst my specific type of year/model Volvo? Remember, I argued with the independent shop to put the ETM in because they had no answers and no suggestions or ideas whatsoever, and same with the dealership.

I'm going to ask the indie shop to run an ETM test. If they cannot, because of my car's computer problems, I'm just going to order a REAL XeMODeX ETM, make the shop put it in, and get a new MAF, because I've read that simply cleaning the MAF does not solve the problem in most cases. Is this a bad idea? What would you do if this is was your only car, and you couldn't afford another car?

I'm sorry for the rant, I'm just frustrated and I really want to drive my car again.

Thank you again!

Carly

Okay, I think I misread a reply,

Sorry, I didn't take my ETM out to read the bottom, I just read Magneti Marelli on the exposed part of the ETM. So it could be a XeMODeX, just inside a Magneti Marelli casing? But it looks so shiny compared to all of the filth under the hood, I guess I had just assumed the WHOLE ETM was new!

Thank you, I'll see if I can read what that component says.

I love you howardc64!

I took a mirror, out and it has the white XeMODeX sticker! YAY! So it's DEFINITELY NOT the ETM?! Would you say it's the mass air flow sensor causing my car to go into limp mode?

Thank you so much!

The lifetime warranty at XeModex is limited to the sensor they fitted and the quality of their resealing procedure and bearing replacement (they fit new bearings to the shaft) and solder work. If the circuit board fails I don't think this is part of the warranty. Only way to find out is to call them. Their number is 1888 712 2525 TOLL FREE

A failing MAF causing limp home mode would throw a fault code, are you getting the cars ECU read with a generic OBD-II reader or the proper Volvo kit??

As the ETM has been changed I doubt it will have failed but getting the ETM check carried out will confirm this so it's still worth having it done. Assuming there are no air leaks on the inlet manifold or vaccum pipes attached to it I would start looking at the throttle pedal transducer as when these fail they can often throw similar symptoms to a failing ETM - Mike
