No Lowbeams on my 240

Post by Slumbo555 »

My Lowbeams stopped working on my '91 240 about a week ago. The highs still work fine. I had the same issue with my S70 a few years back, and the problem was the relay. I assumed the same for this car, so I ordered a new one from ipd. I installed it today and it's still a no-go. I pulled a bulb out and checked it out and it looked fine to me. I'm not sure what else could be the problem. The relay I replaced is the "step" relay under the hood. It's my understanding that the main relay in the dash is just a master on/off for the lights and wouldn't have an affect on the beam setting. Does anyone have advice on what to check next? Thanks for any input.

Have you tried swapping bulbs left to right, right to left? Sometimes a good looking bulb can still be out. If it is truly the bulb a new rely will not help.

Is the low/high beam switch on the column working properly?

As far as I know it is working. When you switch from low to high beams, and vice versa, there is a click at the relay under the hood. I assume that means the switch is working fine. I have some extra headlights so I'll try them out to make sure it isn't a light issue, but I'm fairly certain it isn't.

Tried my backup headlights, but no luck. Any suggestions?

The high beams and the low beams are on separate fuses...These cartridge type fuses are prone to a whitish corrosion...If they are not blown, try spinning them in the holder to clean them up...

Did you go through all the fuses just in case it is wired to another subsystem rather than just the lights. I think the Trunk Open light in the dash is related to the interior lighting to which I shorted (if I remember correctly).

All of the fuses check out. I've read elsewhere that the Bulb Integrity Sensor can cause the lowbeams to fail. Any thoughts on this?

Problem solved! It was the bulb integrity sensor. I had read that these things commonly fail after about 20 yrs or so, and can cause several problems with your various lighting circuits. Evidently the Lowbeams go through this sensor, but the highbeams do not, so that pretty well explains the symptoms. Got a new one off eBay for about $35 plus shipping, and it's an easy fix. Hopefully this can help someone in the future. Thanks for the input everyone!
