reprogram throttle body

2001 v70 non-turbo throttle body -- mine was as messed up as could be, so i purchased a yellow-labeled replacement (used) from ebay and installed in volvo dealer parking lot. 10 minute job. it started and ran just fine, but idled high. i hoped to have volvo reprogram it to my car, and lower the idling. they said once a throttle body has been "married" to a vehicle, that's it. they can't reprogram it.

how can that be? i see these throttle bodies selling used on ebay all the time! am i missing a step? can it be erased and then reprogrammed?

I was told basically the same, I just completed a engine swap in a 2000 V70 XC. The original engine had the white sticker on the throttle body, the new engine has the yellow sticker. When I started the engine with the yellow sticker it idled just above 1000 rpm, and the ETS light stays on. I replaced with throttle body from original engine, my ets light is now off, but it idles rough, between 700 and 900 rpms. I called and talked to a volvo mechanic and they told me that the computer needs to be reprogrammed. I have not had that done, but I am going to have it done.

I'm probably stating the obvious but did you remove the ETM & clean the throttle plate and throttle bore on your ETM ?

Many lumpy idle issues or wavering idle issues can be fixed this way. After doing this you can read the OBD II codes and reset them if they are related to throttle position. You may have to do this 3 times before the ETM will stabilise. When swapping ETMs it's better to get them with similar software dates (ie yellow stickers are more likely to have similar software, but that's no guarantee) If you have a copy of Vida and a Dice unit you can do an ETM sweep test if the ETM unit has post 2006 software.

I've just rebuilt my 3rd ETM (2 for me and one for a customer) and they work fine with a new sensor and a good clean because the software is already matched on the ETM to the VIN. This repair, however is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced repairer. Buy a spare ETM to practise on first.
