850R transmission fluid question, Mobil 1 3309 reg or syn?

Post by TERINASSsydwayz »

1997 855R a/t 184k, unknown previous trans hx, about to do timing belt / PCV system / oil cooler hose fixes / seafoam engine and trans tune / inspect turbo and manofold / clean all the oil out of the intercooler/intake tract / Snabb phenol intake spacer / silicone vac elbows -- trying to complete stage Zero and then find out if the smoking is fixed or if i have to do VS seals.

So i HAVE been searching and my head is spinning, i know i need 3309 - and Mobil 1 seems to be the hands down go to recommendation but also synthetic seems to be preferred.

Searching online i have found a good site (referred to on one of the many threads read) and they offer very good pricing and these are links for the fluids desription:
thelubricantstore.com MOBIL-ATF-3309
thelubricantstore.com MOBIL-Synthetic-MULTI-VEHICLE-ATF

BOTH are stated as being suitable for vehicles with following requirments:
Toyota T-III, T-IV JWS 3309 Volvo 97340

The thing that throws me off is that the regular has a description that specifically states "Exceptionally High Performance Fluid Designed Specifically to Lubricate Aisin-Warner Slip Controlled Lock-Up Automatic Transmissions."

a little clarification would be GREAT, with RECENT experience since one thing i read was about how M1 "lost" it's 3309 designation. .............so f*n confused!!!!

You don't need 3309 for a 4-speed. You can use it, but it's not required.

I'm not sure what the price is on Mobil's 3309, but if the full synthetic isn't too much more (as I recall when I did it, it was $8/qt), it's amazing stuff. Been using it in my car for 70,000 miles (one change in between at 40K on the fluid) and the transmission's still going strong.

My understanding is that all US Spec AT 850's have the AW50-42 LE and use Dex/Merc. As for Mobil 1 you could use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

Mobil 1 (3309) is and makes Volvo's and Toyota's Fluid. It is not Synthetic however as Mobil has a Synthetic. If you are so inclined to read the Post below I'd tried to explain why they made the recommendation "Exceptionally High Performance Fluid Designed Specifically to Lubricate Aisin-Warner Slip Controlled Lock-Up Automatic Transmissions." rather than say ONLY USE.
