Hey guys thanks for the great write-up. I saw earlier that MIJ posted that he would not recommend a transmission flush on a high mileage car that has never had it done before...

My 2000 V70XC now has 189k miles on it and I am not sure if it was ever flushed or not. I make sure to check all the fluid levels regularly, but dont want to ruin a perfectly running car by flushing the transmission...

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Well exchanged about 3.7 gallons of fluid, but we still have same behavior when cold. Delayed\no 1-2 or 2-1 shift. What I expected to be honest, but at least I have nice clean fluid in there. I just used gallon jugs, filled one with old fluid, poured one with new in. Rinse and repeat.

Perhaps consider that a flushing Fluid?

Add some Lucas Transmission stuff as TESTER and if it improves then the Pure Guard is just standard stuff. Do another Full Flush (8 to 10 Quarts) with Swepco 714 20W and you should have your Transmission back and better most of the time.

I'd be interested if your cold shift problems get any better with a few weeks of driving. That ATF stuff apparently has some powerful cleaning effects. If you have clogged passages of pumps maybe they will improve, maybe it'll stay the same.

I just changed mine in my 2000 V70 with high miles. I've no idea what was in there or how long but it was NASTY! The first can looked like drained diesel oil. Judging from the previous owners other worksmanship, I really doubt it was the synthetic. And it had horrendous clunks and shifts, especially when stopping. One test drive and yes I can really tell the difference.
I used a can of TransTune snake oil for 600 miles before the change, trying to dissolve all the gunk for he flush. So we'll see if changing an old transmissions fluid out is a bad thing or not. Anecdotally anyway.

Yeah, avoid transmission flushes! Some manufacturers recommend against it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf6KY6rrqYU Look at this Jiffy Lube and EZ Lube fiasco! :shock:

If you do a drain and fill you've replaced close to half of the used Transmission Fluid. If you pulled the upper Transmission Hose on the Radiator and let out another 3.5 quarts and then fill again you pretty much done a DIY Flush. 50% to 100% fluid change in that manner is not detrimental to your transmission.

The Transmission Fluid also does not sludge up like engine oil. Manufactures have been known to recommend intervals that are too lengthy between fluid changes. As you know Toyota for close to a decade has had a sludge problem with their engines also.

Your transmission does not even come close without consequences and no one is putting in a Cleaner while doing a DIY Flush. From reading many Mechanics comments it is rare that a transmission fails after a Flush as most machines uses the vehicle's own Transmissions pump to circulate the fluid and not any force created by the machine. For those rare instances of Transmission failures the cause is usually not attributed to the new Fluid.

What you saw on the Newscasters hand was hard caked on sludge. When mixed with a cleaner it turns into mud which clogs the oil passages. They in fact did not report any Transmission problems but only whether it was truly a recommendation.

I just this flush yesterday- I was lazy and just did 2 quarts out and 2 in...up to 12 quarts and then was somehow off a bit and had to go buy another quart. I used Mobil-1 synthetic- at $9.99 plus tax (10.25% here), so it was not cheap. As usual, I had great results. Someone said, why reinvent the wheel- I feel the same way. I have also said, don't do the flush on a car that's never had it. I still feel that way...if you have high miles (over 100K) without ever flushing, I would do a drain and fill and in a few hundred miles do it again...maybe up to 3-4 times. I have seen too many older transmissions fubarred when all the crud holding it together comes out and or gets dislodged, further clogging things up....just my opinion, but also what I have seen from friends.

Btw, I was not meaning to post here, but was rather looking for a solution- drove 250 miles today without issue- great running car! This is my '98 S70...then parked the car and it won't start at all...turns over- plenty of compression, there's spark, even fuel, but still no-start. I have no codes...just can't figure it out. I'm thinking Cam Position Sensor...??

I am replacing my Trans Cooler O-rings soon (#27).
Does anyone know if #28 should be replaced or not?

hi after about 4 drain and fills with dex 3 i am noticing a slight jerking when dropping or engaging a gear or from 1st to 2nd is a little ruff. was using the auto zone dex III. Do you think i will benefit for the mobile multivehicle atf synthetic fluid? it has the IIE req that calls for my car in the book. so does that mean its compatible with dex 3 or what? i just want it to be smooth. I no of all the troubles it can cause doing the d&f but i waited inbetween and did 4 of them and the fluid is still black so i think 1 more dex then a full syn flush? Think that will smooth it out or what? Like it just feels rough, i no on the last drain and fill fluid was clean till it mixed with what was in the box then came black again but now you can start seeing the red its like a dark black/red rose color. But i dont think the dex caused it but i dont think my car likes this new fluid lol was wondering if i will benifit from the good stuff.

You could use Walmart Dex/Merc III. That is what I used for five drain and fills. As long as it is Dex III type it doesn't matter. What does matter is what shape the trans was in to begin with.
My fluid was the consistency of coffee. After five drain and fills, it still is'nt clear red, but it is much better.

What is happening is your trans is getting accustom to being clean. The solenoids and TCM are having a learning experience. Mine did the same. There were periods of hard shifts, and slippage when cold, but now it is acting appropriate in most all situations.
Put at least few hundred miles on between drain and fills to let it get used to the new situation of cleaner fluid.
