Had a compression test at Volvo, came out fine. No problem, I am told.

So now what? I guess it is on to the intercooler as a possible source of coolant getting into the combustion cycle, or the turbo. Can anyone guide me to a trouble shoot thread if there is one, or any advice on how to pin down where the coolant is ingressing would be very much appreciated. If I should start a new thread, please tell me.

Thanks

Hello misha and bmk,

Sorry I have not up dated sooner, I have been away working on some "banger and clankers", (diesel engines).

I have been able to find the problem that I was having with the car.

You responded to my posting, so I would like to share with you what it was.

Sorry no photographs, no camera.

I will try to keep it as short as possible.

I looked at the links that you had posted, very good. I purchased the exhaust gas tester and coolant test strips. Completed the gas test three times. No indication of exhaust gas.

The leak down test was done four times.

With the coolant test strips I checked the vapour / water at the tailpipe, there was indication of glycol present. ???

I checked the intercooler using cheese cloth, there were no signs of leakage there.

Out of frustration, I removed the turbocharger once again and this time used a spray on dye and developer for cracks. There was a "Y" shaped crack on the seal ring seat, on the engine side of the of the exhaust turbine casing.

I guess I did not look close enough the first time.

Hi stokerjoker,

I am glad you found the problem! Time permitting perhaps you can help us to understand why the cracked gasket caused the smoke. In reading your post again however you did not say where the smoke came from. If it is under the hood than it is obvious if it was from the exhaust then it is different story. Either way glad you found it!

Blessings,
BKM

You found your culprit!

So....are you saying that coolant was escaping from that seal crack from the engine side of the exhaust turbo casing?
