Transmission Failure?

Post by dongwenxuan »

When I was driving my 02 S60 2.4T FWD on the highway tonight. I set the speed by cruise control. Speed was around 74 mph.

Then I heard loud noise from front right side. I thought it was my front tire got flat so I pulled my car over to the right shoulder and checked it.

The tires looked good. Then I tried to move my car but it just couldn't move at all. I switch from P to D, nothing happened. To L, 3, 4 and R, still nothing. Then I tried to switch to P and heard some noise. The car is dead. It was still power on but it just couldn't move at all. I tried to push the pedal, the engine sounded normal and the RPM looked normal.

Now I am afraid that my transmission got failed but I would like to ask, if there is anything else could lead a Volvo can't move at all?

Thank you!

A joint in the front right axle may have snapped.

It is a possible cause.

I would 2nd this. I don't know if it happens on these cars but I have seen an axle simply pop out of the trans on other cars. They just have a snap ring sort of thing on the end that keeps it locked inside the tranny. With any luck it's just that, otherwise time for a new half shaft.

If this will cause the car fully stopped and not be able to move at all?

I replaced both axles 6 months ago and this is the one I bought last time.

I can't ear much on the video. Have the car inspected by a good mechanic on a hoist. It should be relatively easy to determine the source of the problem.

You should get free replacement, with only 6 months on it...including labor, if the shop did it...Or, if the axle is no longer warranted, try to squeeze for free labor...and post the source of the axle, and if they stand behind it, please! My local indie would do it again free, whether the supplier warranted the axle or not, because its bee so recent.

Update: the passenger side axle pop out so that the car lost power. my mechanic just tight it up, it could be driven now. But if it is safe to drive this car?
