knock sensor help

Changed my 2001 Volvo c70 convertible 2.3l turbo. Can these wires screw anywhere into the block. What is there purpose thanks.

Those are the knock sensors. They need to be where they were designed to be and torqued to spec. The sensors tell the ECM if there are any knock or detonation events occuring; if there are, the ECM will adjust timing to compensate.

16a in the image is just a different variant.
96 850R = ARD Green m4.4, rip, Kilen's, C70vert subframe, S60R exhaust manifold, NA TB with 960 plate, SNAAB J pipe, MSD coil.

If not installed or installed wrong will it cause the car not to start

Yes. There's a screw hole on the engine under the intake manifold for each of them.

I installed one them in the wrong holes and both of them at the wrong degrees. will that cause the motor not to start

Jordan W is right and no, they have nothing to do with it starting or idling.
