Should I rebuild my motor? 2000 S40

Post by tmoose27 »

I have 180,000 miles on my S40 and have truly stayed on top of the scheduled and non scheduled maintenance sense 2005 when I got the car with 62,000 miles. Well now the cam seals are leaking and my mechanic told me that there is something called "Over Blow" or something like that. He believes that the rings in the cylinders are going or have gone bad causing oil to blow out slowly but surely. He said if I replace the cam seal along with all the other seals and water pump that I could still have an oil leak. Therefore, I should just drive it till it dies or sell it for a couple thousand dollars. The problem I have is the car is in good shape otherwise. But I do not want to fix the car and then have the trany go out or turbo. Should I buy a used engine? If you have any advice for me I would be forever grateful.

Excessive blowby, also called excessive crankcase pressure, can be worn rings but on Volvos the crankcase vent box that is responsible for separating the oil from the normal escaping crankcase vapors can become plugged. The crankcase being plugged up is much more likely given a good maintenance record on the car.
Your mechanic may already have checked this but it is worth a talk with him.

Could this also cause my car to overheat? I live in Atlanta and if I hit traffic the car will reach high temps. It doesn't get to red but close. I have replaced the thermostat and fluid. I have read about the relay and possibly the oil cooler. Thank you for your time and info.

There are two fans on your car. The larger one has two speeds. I have seen the high speed fan relay go bad and when the large fan should go from low to high it goes off. Will run hotter and the a/c will perform really poorly.

My mechanic says that I need to replace the PCV oil separator along with the turbo. He says, like you predicted, that the case is plugged but that it has damaged the seals on the turbo & the only way to fix it all is to also replace the turbo. Is this true? Also, I can not locate the ECT sensor nor can I find which sensor will fit my car. The pictures online are different. Once again, thank you for your time
