Drivers side door will NOT open & Ignition is in locked???

Post by jorstefy »

Hello, I have a bit of a situation. Currently I had my car towed to a volvo "specialist" shop. The issues are as listed:

1) The drivers side door outside handle and inside handle will to open the door. The handles are still intact, but whatever was connect to them on the inside either fell off or broke. So now my door is locked without actually being locked and I am unable to get in and out of the drivers door. The door lock still operates fine and the window rolls up and down great, its just whatever connects to the handles from the inside panel is broken or disconnected.

***The mechanic is saying that the only way to fix the door is to replace the whole panel. They were also saying that volvo only sells the parts I will need with the door panel as a whole. Something about this doesn't sound right if the broken parts are only on the inside of the door...any advice or wisdom???

2) My ignition is stuck in the locked position. I've tried my main key and the spare keys and still it will not turn.

***The mechanic is saying that I am in need of a new ignition cylinder or something( I don't have it in writing yet so i don't remember the part name off hand). They gave me a rough estimate of $900-$1,300 JUST for the ignition cylinder not including labor. I looked up an ignition cylinder and the most expensive one I found went for $250. Does this sound right to anyone?

Can someone PLEASE shed some light on this subject??? As sad as it is, I am not a car guy.

I had my ignition lock and was told the same thing, the cylinder had to be odered from Volvo Europe in order that the current keys would work with the new cylinder, cost $495.00 plus instalation $129.00.A mechanic said meet outback ,he removed
the plastic suround behind the steering wheel and cleared the cable that connects to the shift, lever as it was stuck,
this solved the problem that never happened again..Re door a clip that hold s the conecting rod from falling out may have
broke,a talented lock person may be able get get a grip of the tail of the door lock by going in between the out side of
window and the door with a bar used getting into a locked car, this worked for my brother in law with the same problem.

no man don't go to the stealership. once you find a way to get the door open, take the door panel of. and see if its the actuator, or something else that can be causing the problem. it could be a switch a fuse anything. as for the key stuck. it sounds like a cable is disconnected or something. like the guy said in last post probably have to take the back of and check it out. or there is a key lock release cable that connects all the way to the shifter and if it doesn't go into park all the way u wont be able to get the key out in some cars. i dunno about an 03 as i have a 94, So things may be different. But i would wait for some more members to chime in on this as you will find an answer you were looking for. But don't listen to nothing the stealership sais, and don't go back there and if you can turn a wrench its better to study this site and learn your car and do everything yourself. That's how to own a Volvo with way lower cost lol. I didn't no much about cars when i started but could turn a wrench and read directions and now I am a amateur mechanic so yea!
