Unless she's towing a trailer, she doesn't need the OD disengaged. The OD switching is noticeable regardless of which gear the trans is in. The default is disengaged OD.
To eliminate the kick-down, count the shifts the trans goes through as you get up to speed. The kick-down could be out of adjustment or hanging up in the cable sheath. It should have about 5mm slack.
Buy the OD bypass plate if that is the problem

A broken wire is common under the car. The solenoid doesn't make a lot on noise, it's barely noticable.
If you're getting voltage on the solenoid wire under the car, the solenoid/valve is shot.
