2004 S60 T5 takes 2 key turns to start

Post by kenannee »

Our 2004 S60 has basically been a good car with no major service issues. Serveral years ago, however, I began noticing that the car would not always ignite on the first attempt to start. It would begin to turn over, but not ignite. On the second attempt, the car always started like new. In the beginning this was intermittent, but normally when the engine was cold (the first start of the day). Now the car when cold almost always requires a 2nd attempt before igniting and if it has been sitting just a little while (like an hour) it often require a second key turn to start. This slow start happens most of the time now.

The car has been serviced by a dealer and reputable auto repair shop, but no one has found a sure answer or been able to help the problem. I'm concerned because 1) it is a nuisance 2) it is getting worse. I would like to repair it before I have a real problem. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the issue could be related to fuel pressure drop. There is a check valve built into the fuel pump which is inside the tank. Over time it will begin to leak. Next time the car has been sitting for a while turn the key to position 2 for a few seconds to let the pump prime, then back to off, then back to position 2 for a few seconds for another prime, and then start. If it fires right up then it's a leaky check valve. An easy fix is to install a universal check valve in the rubber fuel line just before the fuel filter (also a good time to replace the filter if it hasn't been done).

Mine is 2001 S60 and I have the same problem. I've tried to turn the key to ON position letting the pump working for a while. But it didn't solve the problem. I've also replaced the fuel filter.

Mine also has a strong gas smell outside on the passage side.

Could anyone give suggestions on what should I inspect next?

Bring your car or call the dealer. There is a recall on defective fuel pumps.
