Volvo Repair Database 2004 XC70 Front WindShield Washer Pump 31349228 How To with Pictures

XC70 and other P2 Front Windshield (Windscreen) washer pump replacement is easy and quick if you do it via the front bumper.

The pictures were taken after removal so things may look "out of order"

1. From under the hood, remove the six "push-button" clips from the bumper cover. Pop in the centre of the clip (lightly) and pry out the clip for re-use later.

2. Pop out the two smaller inserts in the bumper and remove the two bolts. Remove the headlamp wipers.

3. Inside the wheel well, towards the front of the car are Torx25 bolts that holds a retainer that "snugs up" the bumper against the fender (this will make more sense AFTER the bumper is off :-) ) loosen 5 to 10 turns, leaving them in. Tap gently on the bolts if necessary to release the retainers.

4. Unclip the bumper at the sides and grab it from the center and pull straight out and lay it on the ground in front of the car. Disconnect the fog lights (if equiped) if you want to move it out of the way.

5. Place a container under the washer bottle and pull the pump out (no screws or clips, just a rubber grommet)

6. My pump had two outlets on it - most aftermarket pumps have only one. I'm not sure where the second line goes, so I purchased a Volvo original with the two outlets. This is a good time to remove the T junction and extra tubing for the headlight washers which are most likely no longer working. Plug in the pump and test.

7. Assembly is the reverse. The bumper has a centering pin near the middle in the front and guides on the top edge at the sides to help line it up. To re-install the under hood clips, pull out the centre pin about 1/4 inch, insert the clip and pop the button back down flush.

Test again with the hood closed - stick a fork in yourself: you're done!

Now how did that happen, couldn't be pilot error! <grin>. I guess I'm still having trouble accepting that i've left the hallowed 850 and related group! I will endeavor to be more vigilant!!

Which translates to "dummy, i put it in the wring place"

Great information. The second line is for the rear washer. You're right, most aftermarket pumps have only one. In the same model year (2004) later VIN numbers (last 6 digits -127149 and beyond) went to a single pump which is A LOT for expensive than buying 2 pumps with the old design. Partsgeek has an OES(?) that arrived 2 days after I ordered it for $65. The Volvo dealer wanted $90. Hope this helps. OBTW, you saved me $200 in labor. Thanks.

Also, I had to PRIME the pump BEFORE reattaching the hoses to prevent an air lock in the pump. I know it sounds weird but after priming the pump, I immediately had fluid coming out of all washer nozzles.

Nice write-up. Went out to look at my 01 V70 T5 to make sure I understood the 6 push pin connectors. Good thing I did, as I found that only the 2 center ones were remaining! I had lost the other 4. Fortunatly zip ties work until I can get the proper replacements. I had noted that the rubber seal between the front grill and hood looked different the last time I washed. Now I know why!

Awesome directions and pictures. I was able to fix my 2001 xc70 right side headlight using these directions. Thank you so much!

I am sorry but what do you exactly mean by priming the pump?

Thank you!!

I just replaced the pump on my 2004 xc70 because both front and rear washer fluid wasn't squirting. Success with the front but not the rear. Any suggestions? This is the part I used:

Part was identical to the one I removed.
