I will be the first to tell you that mine does not resemble a '93. It was in an accidennt and revived.
Some parts were changed from necessity. Others for fun.
Bottom Line.
Given the specificity of parts. maintanance, attention, Money, time, ... Is a 1993 Volvo 850 worth life support?

I do plan to take it out of commission for a day this week to finaly do the timinng belt, idler and tensioner pulleys.
I have confidence in the replacement parts chosen, and do not plan any upgrades toward a larger belt and pully/tensioner. Just the oem/oes 143 tooth belt and original width. (not trying to advertize...INA, Miasuboshi)
Honestly, it has lasted 170k and I trust the design. I will visually inspect everyrhing. But as far as the water pump and any other oil seals up top, do not plan to replace them.
I do, however, plan on replacing the serpentine pulleys. Both tensioner and idler, (Belt ofcourse) because there is a definite rattle from the font side, I recognize as a tired bearing.
So bottom line on this one, I plan on an all around quieter, (pulley wise) Front end. I may not mind the sound of a fresh timing belt.
These are my feelings only, and I invite any input whatsoever.

Keep it, run it into the ground, then buy another car.
No point in trading up for a later year of the same model when you've already got a perfectly good car. If you're good with maintenance and work yourself, you're already ahead of the game.
Change the timing belt at 50K intervals and don't worry about the unique parts specific to your model. Other than things like the VVIS intake manifold, 4-bolt wheels and hubs, and the timing belt setup, the rest of the car is the same as a '94 or later model 850.

Yeah, I agree, and am aware of everything you've mentioned here. It's somewhat funny that I've waited this long to do the timing belt, knowing it may be the origial piece. I think I wanted to see if I could blow the motor. If I still like it, I may replace the rear main seal before winter. It is the last thing I can see that still needs any attention.(until the next.ha)

I too love my 1993 850 manual, my first front wheel drive. It is my work and play car, I am a volunteer fireman, and a recreational kayaker as you can see in the pictures. I rolled this car the first winter I drove it about 3 years ago, good thing there was about 2 feet of snowbanks as it rolled over the snow, I have always owned rear wheel. I replaced the windshield and fixed a tire and it was back on the road. I had to replace the front suspension within a month after the accident, tie rods, ball joints. It has some rust on it from northern New York Winters, the state uses salt on the roads. I have started a engine replacement project on this car, the timing belt broke on the highway at 60mph on July 3rd and took out some of the valves, it would not run after. The timing belt only had 80,000 on it and was replace in 2006. I have only owned this since the fall of 2007 and with 141,000 on it. It now has 184,000 on it.

So I guess what you're saying is, you like your '93? Wow, I thought I would junk mine after a front end accident deployed the airbags. I couldn't let mine die either. I even bought hydraulic tools and did my own unibody straightening.
