Tranny fluid confusion

Post by AlanS »

So, after all my posts, and going to get Toyota IV ATF, I found my manual for my 2001 S40. It says that the car was built in 10/00, has a AW 55-50 Transmission. and uses ATF Dexron III and Mercon Oil I am assuming (Duhh), not to use the T-IV, and go out and get some Dexron III !!! HELP! Any recommendations? It is in the middle of a Drain and Fill...car is now down 3qts of fluid. Since I bought the car used (many years ago), I always assumed it was a 2001...the manual cover says "2001". Is there any way to confirm what tranny I have?

Without confusing you further and getting into all the details VI supersedes the III. Go ahead and use it.

Just to make sure I am not CONFUSED, SInce there will still be 'old' unknown fluid in the case, the T-IV is compatible? I am only down 3 quarts.

On the top of the transmission on my v70 Xc is a label that clearly states the model # , serial number of the transmission and name of manufacturer. ie 56-50. Check your transmission. If you have a Aisin AW Co Ltd. transmission, T-IV is acceptable ATF fluid.

Just for your information , Valvoline sells "MAX LIFE - a DEX-MERC ATF Synthetic Fluid". which states it is compatible with Type T-IV and meets volvo standards 1161540. If you have a Aisin AW co. Ltd transmission you should be ok using this also .

Just to be forthwright, Most viewers suggest sticking with the mineral oil based Toyota Type T-IV or Mobil 3309. I would suggest that you just put in the T-IV if you already have it. Being down 3 Quarts is almost half empty making the vehicle non-driveable.

I have a 2001 V40, same transmission and I used T-IV in mine, only having recently bought the Volvo and not knowing what fluid was in there before. I've had zero problems since.

I plan to do another drain/fill in a few hundred miles so eventually, all of the old will get swapped out with the T-IV.
