Ignition switch starting to stick

Ignition is starting to stick, using both keys. I've been told this is common and the next step will be a complete lock-up of the ignition device. Dealer says it is a $600.00 part requiring coding to my keys.

I had this problem. One day I turned off the ignition to refill the gas tank and the key would not turn in the cylinder. The vehicle could not be moved. I was stuck at the gas station pump for hours until force was applied to the cylinder. Luckily for me, no damage was done. So don't wait to apply this solution ASAP. Spray thru a tube either DW-40 or use White Lithium Grease or both. I used the grease. Problem has been solved for over 5 months now. Spray enough grease or dw-40 so that the dirt and crud spill out. have a rag handy. Reapply the grease or dw-40 again. Then using key gently turn on and off as the grease or liquid seep into the lock pins. Reapply more grease or liquid until smooth. Reapply a few days later just for good measure. TIme necessary 10 minutes.

I'm not sure if your 2004 xc has the same set up as my 2000 C70 which I replaced the lock cylinder. But when I ordered my lock cylinder it came keyed to my keys. The keys didn't need to be coded because the code ring was separate from the cylinder.
