Recently my 2000,V70 XC has had a little "hiccup" while at stop signs, traffic lights, or backing up. This was very random. I had the codes read and came back with cylinder 1 miss fire. Replaced the ignition coil, (very simple job) and while the plastic covers were still off I tested the work. The car cranked perfectly, placed the car in reverse, no hiccups, let it idle in park, no hiccups, just as smooth as you would want an engine to run. So I replaced covers, timing belt / spark plugs) eyeballed everything, closed the hood and as anyone would do after putting all the tools up, gave the car one more crank.
It turns over fine, but there is not even a hint of the engine trying to fire. Opened it back up checked all connections, (no go). Replaced the ignition coil with the one I had taken out, (no go). Replaced that coil with the new one and still (no-go).
During testing I noticed that the stick shift was suddenly having a hard time releasing as I wanted to try to crank the car in neutral. Huge rain storm approached so the testing was delayed until the morning.
Next morning, the battery was dead. Stick shift would still not move. Put a slow charge on the battery and power appears good. Key the ignition and stick shift will move. The engine turns over but will not fire. Tried in "park" as well as in "neutral".
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom

Is it possible you bumped the cam position sensor? Maybe unplug it and plug it back in.

Random problems happen with old cars all the time. Check for fuel pressure and spark. If you have NEITHER, your cam sensor is likely gone bad.

In models with direct ignition coils, the Plastic Cover is known to squeeze the wires!
Remove the Plastic Cover and inspect all the wires for any damage.
The key thing is: when installing the Plastic Cover tuck all the wires down properly!

I appreciate the replies. I checked the camshaft sensor as far as being plugged in, it was, I unplugged and plugged it back in. Same results, engine will turnover and not fire. I did notice this morning that I cannot move the shift lever from the "park" position. Could the engine not firing be related to this issue?
Logistics are preventing me from getting coded read to see what errors may be showing up.
Thanks,
Tom

yeah, that could be your problem but I don't have any words of wisdom relative to a bypass test. It is probably killing your spark and may well be a pretty easy fix. I'd just trudge through here and see if something rings a bell.

Did you remove the plastic cover for an inspection?
Remember your car started fine after the install but failed to start after you buttoned everything together???

It is kind of confusing reading your post.

The note referred to the covers that I replaced, (timing belt cover and spark plug covers). All plugs were replaced about 10 months ago.
Replaced coil, tested, OK
Replaced the two covers and engine will not fire.
