Turn signals and shift interlock fail together

Hey,
My 1998 V70R (163k miles) has this odd thing where the turn signals stop working entirely and the transmission shift intelock also fails (you have to press the override button to the right of the shifter to get it into gear). These two happen pretty much together, and it has happened 3 - 4 times, but infrequently, spread over weeks. Not much in common among the incidents.
When the turn signals fail, they are completely dead, nothing blinking or steady, inside car or outside.

I replaced the emergency flasher unit about a year ago.

Any ideas? Should these two things be related at all? I checked various fuses, all seem fine. And both these things work most of the time, but this dual random failure thing is annoying..

Sounds very much like the failing contact block of your ignition switch.
Next time it happens, give the key a little jiggle.

Thanks, I will try that. Sounds like the only thing those two would have in common.

Is the permanent fix to replace the ignition switch? Any info on that?

Thanks again! You are correct; lots of info on it. I will be ordering the switch tonight....headlights did not automatically come on until I jiggled the key around a bit after starting, which is a new symptom....
