And then a miracle occurred!

It runs perfectly!

I cleared a couple of leftover CELs and then took it to get some gas. The tank showed empty and it was empty and then some - It took 18.4 gallons.

After getting it back home, this was about a 1 mile round trip, and letting it idle while I checked transmission fluid I did throw a CEL, P0014 which is the exhaust cam timing over advanced code.

I may have screwed up when I set the exhaust cam timing earlier in this post but I think I will get it out on the highway and build up some oil pressure before I go changing the cam timing since it idles so smoothly. I still need to put on the covers and the heat shields around the exhaust but I am one happy camper right now.

Good job! It's a good thing the engines in our cars are horizontally opposed vs. vertically- I''ve seen people get salvage RWD motors that were "running before the accident"- but in the accidents, if the impact is severe enough it will push the crankshaft pulley back, forcing the counterweights against the rod bearings and wreaking havoc inside the engine. It happened to a friend with a Durango and another with a Rodeo. My friend got the Durango engine all the way into the car then waited until it was in to mate up the flex plate to the flywheel (should've done that outside the car!) and discovered he could only turn it 1/4 of a stroke.
Sounds like you got a good deal. Wood shift knobs for the win!

horizontally opposed vs. vertically

What you mean is, transversely mounted vs. longitudinally mounted.

Horizontally opposed is when you have two banks of cylinders in the same geometric plane - a V engine with a 180 degree "V", thus it really isn't shaped like a V anymore. See Honda Gold Wing with the 1800cc for an example.

not taht pulling an engine on one of these is easy, but your pictures sure make it look easy to do a timing belt and waterpump, wish they were that easy in the car
