Oxygen Sensor Problem?

Hi I own a 1999 V70 and recently had a dash light appear indicating a front O2 sensor was U/S. I had the front and rear O2 sensors replaced with new Bosch Non Genuine sensors and the code reset, later that day the dash light re-appeared. I then took the car to a volvo specilist and had the sensors changed again with new front and rear O2 sensors (Bosch Non Genuine) and the code reset (they thought the first ones were faulty). Unfortunantly the dash light appeared later that day again.

When you drive the car their is a very strong fume smell outside indicating that it is running very rich.

I have spoken to several Volvo people and some say that I have to get genuine Volvo sensor's to fix the problem but they are over AUS$600.00 each.

Can someone help me please.

Is it the sensors at fault or something else causing them to fault.

Most people have big trouble with universal o2 sensors. Is your V70 the non-turbo model? If so, it's important that you replace both sensors at the same time. There are a few places in the US that have genuine direct fit sensors for a good price. I can't imagine postage to AUS + applicable import tax being that much. Many people use AZ Autohaus for genuine Bosch sensors. I believe they're around $120 USD.

Thanks heaps for your quick response "White850Turbo".

Yes my V70 is the non-turbo model and our mechanic replaced both the front and rear sensors.

I was wondering if you think that having a bosch non genuine sensor would definantly cause this fault and not another problem causing the car to run rich and tripping the sensor.

Several people I have spoken to said that the genuine volvo sensors are bosch anyway so I just dont know why the non genuine would not work.

I had a check engine light coming on and off few months ago, the dealer told me the codes were related to the front o2 sensor and my engine was running too rich.They suggested to change my front O2 sensor. A week later I had my ETM upgrade software and since then, no more CEL !

Ask for a upgrade first.......if it was'nt done already.

I also had a bad front O2 sensor.....thought i could save some money by ordering a " Walker " direct fit for my 2000 C70.
CEL stayed on after i installed the walker.....Replaced with OEM bosch
CEL is gone, that was a year ago.

Maybe I can clear up the confusion.
Bosch does make the OEM 02 sensors, however there are two kinds. One is a direct fit (OEM) and uses a plug on it that mates up with the one in your Volvo. The other is a generic one that you have to splice because it has no mating plug. People have had trouble with the generic Bosch sensors.

To make matters worse, some independent Volvo shops got a list of wrongly coded sensors and were putting the wrong sensors in some 850's and other Volvo's....so it's always a good idea to cross-reference the 02 sensors with Bosch and Volvo.
