96 850 R misfire, p0300 p0304 p0305 p1310 codes

Post by microsuperman »

I have a 96 850r that as I was driving down the Freeway I had the check engine light come one and it started shaking.
I got the codes read. they are p0300 p0304 p0305 p1310.
From reading the forum I decided to replace the plugs, wires, roter, and cap.
But I am still having the same codes.
Should I also look at replacing the ignition coil :?:
Or should I look at doing something else :?:

The codes are all misfire codes. How does the car idle? Does it only misfire at higher revs?

It runs ruff at low RPM's and struggle when I start moving. At high RPM's the vibration is almost not there.

You may want to do a compression test. Also, you could have a coil going bad.

All the cylinders don't have bad valves. No need for a compression test on this one.

Does it idle OK with the mass airflow sensor unplugged? When was the last time that wires, distributor cap, and rotor were changed?

Well I decided to do some triple checking. So I made sure that the wires were in the right locations and that the spark gaps were set to .028. I found that cylinder 5 is firing, and cylinder 4 is not. When pulled out the plug 4 it was wet and smelt of gas.

I tryed running without the MAF pluged in, with no change. Before yesterday I had never changed the wires, distributor cap or rotor and I bought it in 2004.
Is a compression test something that I could have done at someplace like Autozone or would I need to buy a kit and then test it.

If it is only number 4 that is not firing, then checking the compression moves back to the top of the list. It does sound like possibly a valve is burnt.

Harbor Freight sells cheap compression gauges for cheap. They aren't necessarily the most accurate but at this point we are looking for glaring compression problems, not the differences between book spec and the measured spec. I think O'Reilly auto parts and AutoZone rent them as well. The rental turns out to be free. They charge your credit card for the price of the tool and then when you return it they credit back 100% of the purchase price.

You put in all new ignition parts right? Sure you got the dist cap back on correctly? See if you can pick up a junk yard coil or check the coil connections to be sure they are OK. Be sure you have the dist cap center wire well seated, that one runs the world. Are you sure you got the right plugs? Volvo? The R takes a slightly different plug (V70R anyway).

I checked and rechecked all of those things. I even pulled the the wire for cylinder one of the old wire set and replaced number 4 with it and still had no change. It really looking like it is a burnt valve. I will get a hold of a compression tester, and go from there.
