240 1992 front wheel bearing

Post by Pizzadude »

I need to replace the front wheel bearing on my 1992 Volvo 240 sedan. This will be my first time to work on this car other than changing the oil. I would appreciate it if someone knows where I can find step by step instructions other than a Chilton or Haynes manual.

Thanks.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

I apologize for the delay in replying but my computer died.

This is a straightforward operation on the 240.

Raise and support the car and remove the appropriate wheel.
Remove the brake pads and caliper. Hang the caliper from the spring with a piece of strong wire to avoid strain on the hose. A wire coat hanger is ideal.
Remove the grease cap by prying it out of the hub.
Remove the cotter pin, the hub nut, outer bearing and brake disc.
Remove the inner seal, bearing , inner and outer races.

Installation is the reverse of the above.
While rotating the hub tighten the hub nut to 42 ft.lbs (57nm) then loosen the nut a 1/2 turn and then tighten by hand. Ensure the hub rotates freely without any end play.
If necessary, loosen the hub nut slightly to align the cotter pin hole.
Install a new cotter pin. Recheck end play.
Refit the brake caliper and pads.

Bill.

All beginners take head. This is a great simplified description for an advanced home mechanic but if you have never removed Brake Callipers before or installed a Race into the Spindle then don't take this lightly.

Read the two pages (links below) carefully before embarking on this job. There are linked pictures for each step.

If your not careful it can turn into an all day job. Make sure you have all the tools you need and a clean work surface.

Also read carefully how to tighten the Castle Nut! I have an 84 and didn't have a washer between the Castle Nut and bearing. It is advised to use a tension wrench if you have a spacer between the Castle nut and the bearing.

My advise is to have the Inner and outer Races professionally Pressed out and in. Save yourself the grief!

This is handy for a guide to removing Callipers:
