My brother passed away and his widow has his 2001 V-70...The in-dash read-out for outside temperature is not working...Can anyone tell me where the temperature probe is?...

The temp sensor is located in the passenger side mirror.

Thank you for the condolences...

We have been down this road before, and one thing is sure, the sensor for the in-dash temperature and the ice warning is NOT in the side view mirror, it is somewhrere up front and down low to sense road icing...When he was alive, my brother took a heat gun and heated the mirrors until they were too hot to touch and the temperature never changed...Now the temperature is not working at all and I have been told that the probe is in the grill area, but I can't find it...

But you are right, there ARE temperature sensors in the side view mirrors...They control the mirror heaters...

The 2000's (lower one) have it under the front bumper, just below where the fog lights would be. It's a little plastic plug; there is one on both sides, but the drivers side one controls the dash display. Sometimes the model years get mixed up.

P2 V70/XC70 have it only in the RH mirror for all users of outside temp data other than ECM which has its own in the left mirror.
They handle the road icing issue by illuminating the ice warning LED at 36 degrees F.
The mirrors are on timers and have no temp sensor needed.

My brother (now deceased) bought this car on e-bay and we argued about that, generating a lot of hard feelings...The car was a dog from the git-go and I told him so...

His son (my nephew) tells me the A/C never worked right, cutting out when the outside temperature reached some now unknown point...He posted to one of the forums and was told that the temperature probe was bad and was in the side view mirror...He took a heat gun to the mirrors and nothing happened...The parts desk man at the dealership told him he was not sure exactly where, but the probe was somewhere in the grill or bumper area...I guess he never found it and the temperature reading is not showing up at all now...I would like to help his wife out because she is on fixed income now and cannot afford dealer repairs...

Based on what I have read here today, I went out to my own XC and heated the mirrors... The temperature read 86 degrees, the engine was running, and the A/C was on...I heated both mirrors with an industrial heat gun until they were pretty warm, but the temperature never moved off 68 degrees after about 1/2 hour of heating... ?????... Based on this, I think I can be certain that, at least in my car, the temperature probe for the in-dash readout is NOT in the mirrors...

Take a look at the "shim fix" or bread clip fix for your AC problem. I like to change the shims but it is more work. I do about 10 of these a year for customers - very common issue.

Unless your car is the only one then it has the probes as the bump on the bottom of mirror. I have heated and applied ice to test them dozens of times. I did this while watching VIDA or VADIS to see temp change as diagnosing problems.
You look at passenger door module for the right side and ECM for the left side. The right side one is used for display on dash, climate functions and any other use for modules on the networks.
If you apply heat or cold to the bump that faces down on bottom of mirror you will see a change unless there is a fault. Do it to RH mirror.

I'll try that tomorrow...Thanks...However, that won't fix her V-70 with the dead readout and we will have to investigate further...

From what I understand from the nephew, the A/C cut out at exactly the same temperature readout every time, regardless the lenghth of time it was running...That seems to be temperature related, not clutch...
