Thanks. Regarding the screws - what is a balancing screw?

Of further note, VADIS says:
"Note! Carry out the following if the original propeller shaft is reinstalled either without the rear joint being replaced, or without the flange on the final drive being removed or replaced: Install the propeller shaft according to the markings made when it was removed (see above). Use new screws of the same length as the ones removed. Use new screws of standard length if replacing the propeller shaft."

First, how 'bad' would it be to use the old screws if replacing the propeller shaft?

All VADIS says is the standard screw is 50mm. That doesn't seem to be enough information to buy new screws. I'd like to have all of my supplies before I take everything apart. Do you know what I should get for screws?

Nevermind, I didn't have balancing screws - and the screws looked in good shape. Replaced my driveshaft today, with a lot of help from a friend.

I know this is in the 1992-2000 forum but it's linked into the second-gen XC70 forum as well so I thought I'd ask my question here to start. I have a 2004 XC70 with 137K miles and it's started to make a sound and vibration similar to what's been described when the front CV joint of the drive shaft is going bad. This is a great write-up but I was wondering if there is a write-up of the drive shaft removal procedure more specific to second-gen XC70's? I'm asking because when I got under the car I was confronted with several things blocking my access to the bolts at the front of the drive shaft and I'm unsure which I can safely remove and which I have to work around. One is the plastic splash/skid plate which of course can be removed but there is also what looks like a substantial cross-member in the way. Sorry I don't have pictures but if someone can point me to a write-up I'd very much appreciate it. I've searched Google but everything I find seems specific to first-gen XC70's and none of the pictures show the same elements I see under my car. Thanks.

This is a great thread and I only wish I'd read it before the front CV joint on my propshaft failed.
