Tapping after head off repair.
Had two stuck exhaust valves, and non-functioning turbo unit on 850 Turbo, following word for word directions on Tracy's Soaps and other postings, replaced valves, rebuilt turbo charger. Refilled with new oil, added some Marvel Mystery Oil to dry cylinders before turning her over. Unlike before this work, now firing on all cylinders, but head sounds like it's not getting oil. Dropped oil pan to see if pump was clogged with sludge which settled during repair, pump was clean as a whistle though. This engine didn't have tapping before "fix". Looking for ideas.

How long has it been tapping? I assume you are talking about lifter noise. Most people soak the lifters before they put things back together. Mine tapped until I took it out on the highway. Let it idle for about 15 minutes and it kept tapping, one after another, took it to the store within 3 miles it all went quite and hasn't tapped since.

I have had white engines tap for a long long time, 500 miles, before tapping went away for good. The air has to go downhill to get out and tappets have very little oil flow through them.

I haven't run the engine for more then a few minutes, fearing that I was damaging the head. I neglected to soak the lifters before putting the head back in. Sounds like I just need to run it.

The 850 DOHC 10 valve I reconditioned in 2010 was very noisy for around 150 miles and as I drove it further I could hear less of them tapping until finally one then none.
Strangely the 20 valve '99 V70 I recently rebuilt was whisper quiet, even though I didn't soak the lifters at all.
