Sorry if I steered you wrong on your 960 repair but it can't be much harder and the first time it took me an hour because I was afraid of it but I have since then taken my dash apart & reseated my heater core while chasing a leak in 15 minutes. Just be careful with the airbag and you can do it . As far as the coupler went I had the hardest time because I didn't want to remove anything to work on it, so it was a space problem but otherwise the tutorials on here were plenty helpful. Like with anything else you try to learn, if it seems that something is just TOO hard to do then you are probably doing it wrong.
Thanks for the advice... How were you able to wait on the heater core? I'm in CT - so I don't mind not having heat - it's the icing on the window that is frustrating... Where you guys at? Great advice.. try and learn...
I would even try cutting the firewall on the engine side if that might work? My issue is I can't have the car down too long... I'm actually looking forward to the challenge...

Melbourne Winters can be cold but we don't have snow in the city. The heated seats still work well so it wasn't really an issue when wearing a good scarf and beanie.
The heater matrix pipes protrude directly from the firewall (no coupling)
Dealer time is 6:30 with A/C . Plan on around 9-10 hours plus down time ordering or fabricating all the stuff you might break on the way.

thanks for the information. just wondering is there anyway to cut the firewall on the engine side and take it out and then patch up the firewall? I guess my question is the firewall the only thing holding it in on that side? I had anti freeze leaking all over the
passenger side floor... Has anyone ever tried taking it out from that side? I've done other cars before and it's been both ways.
The inside always is a pain in the butt...

I certainly wouldn't be that adventurous to cut my firewall. I have no sheet metal skills and certainly no way to ensure it would look good when finished.

I totally agree with you - It's also called a firewall for a purpose - safety - however -with pluming and other things you might be able to get away with something like that?
Anyone else ever try going in through the engine compartment side? I was thinking I could just cut out a rectangle in the firewall and patch it up after - basically pit the cutout back on... I'm just looking for heat - It would surely be a hack job..

i'm in the middle of trying to replace the heater core on my 96 960... I'm trying to get to end from the center console. I removed the mess of cables behind the radio and the duct work - also glove box? What next? I really don't want to remove the steering wheel... snapped some plastic along the way:(
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
