1992 940 Turbo wagon, not wanting to go until in 2nd

Post by Bbelden »

Hello. I have a 1992 Volvo 940 Turbo Wagon. I love my car but it is making me a little bit crazy. Last week it died on me on the bypass. Turned out that the turbo intake hose had just come loose so easy fix. It was driving fine until last night. My husband pulled in the drive way and it was rattling really bad. I asked him how long it had been doing that and he said it started about 1/2 way home. So I drove it this morning and it is rattling hard, I have to put the pedal to the floor almost to get it to go until it gets out of 1st then it seems to drive ok except for the rattle. So once I get to about 20 mph it doesn't seem to have an issue with accelerating however going from a stop to 20 or so mph it shakes and sputters and acts like fuel isn't getting to the engine.

I won't pretend to know everything about my car but I am fairly handy and willing to try and work on it to the extent that I am able if anyone has any idea what I should try and look for before calling in the big guns.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

'Rattle' - is this coming from the engine and does it stop when you get to the magical 20 or so mph?

On your car you have two fuel pumps. The main pump is mounted under the car and the second pump is in the fuel tank. The in-tank pump acts as a priming pump for the main and if it is not working as advertised it can cause fuel delivery problems. These problems get worse as the amount of fuel in the tank drops because the main pump needs to do the work of two.

You can do a quick listening check on both pumps. To check the main pump have someone switch on the ignition whilst you listen for a momentary noise from the pump. The in-tank pump can be heard by removing the filler cap and listening for a momentary noise as someone switches on the ignition. If you can't hear one or the other check the fuses.

Do you have a check engine light illuminated? Have you run a check for fault codes using the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit in the engine compartment? Instructions for its use are pinned at the top of this forum. This is a first step when diagnosing these cars.

Do these preliminary checks and post back with the results.

Bill.

The rattle is coming from the muffler shaking. It keeps doing it even after I hit 20. Check engine light is not on. I will try and figure out how to run the check this morning and let you know what that says.

Unless a previous owner has taken it off and sold it  it should be bolted behind the left front strut assembly. The attached shows what it looks like closed and open. Occasionally the cover does go missing.
