How do I test an 850 radiator fan?

Post by barrylay »

My 850 radiator fan is not kicking in. How do I test it? Using a voltage tester I do see juice going to the fan (black wire) and to the relays (on the frame above the radiator). Just not sure where to go next.
Thanks
Barry

Have you tried.... spinning it by hand to see if it's seized up or not? And what happens if you turn on the AC? Should kick in if your AC is charged.

The black wire is ground so you really shouldn't see any voltage there unless it is unplugged from the connector that is clipped on the fan shroud.

There are three wires going to the fan; Red & Green are the +V fan wires for high and low speed. I'm not sure, off the top of my head, which wire gets energized for high speed and the black wire is ground. Apply + battery voltage to the red and green wires, individually, to see if the fan will run at high and low speed. If it doesn't then either the fan is bad or the ground is bad.
