I'm glad that you're OK and that your Volvo protected you.

Jblackburn is right....I would keep it for a "spare parts car" since it's not worth much being wrecked.

What happened with insurance? Will they pay you off the damage for your car?

Few months ago, back in January....i totaled my 340,but it wasn't my fault. The woman didn's stoped at "STOP" sign. The insurance pronounced it in total loss....and they payed me how much it was worth in the market up to that day minus 30% because i wanted to take the money (cash)and i didn't wanted to repair it.So,the car was worth 1000eur on our market(around 1300us $) and they payed me off with 700eur(910us $).

I was in the quest for another Volvo...'97 460,but that car was sold in the front of my nose.So...I took the money from the insurance, added a little and bought another car.

Well, I'm 1,000 miles away in rust-free Texas. My 1997 850R is probably already sold, because I am holding it for a Craigslister who is supposed to show up at the end of this week to buy it, but you never know if he'll take it, or turn away. So, its not for sale until he sees it and decides not to buy.

1997 Volvo 850R, Auto Trans, Sunroof, 182,000 miles Blown Head Gasket. Head gasket blew less than a mile from my home, so car was parked, and is not being driven or run.

182,000 miles. Has been well maintained:
Within last year the following have been replaced as part of normal maintenance:
Upper and Lower Motor Mount Torque Rods/Mounts, Front Motor Mount replaced PCV "Oil Trap" System and hoses
Timing Belt, water pump replaced
Left Front Hub/Bearing Replaced Turbo Intercooler hoses replaced Both Front drive axles
Regular Mobil 1 Oil Changes
Tires are still pretty decent
Brakes are good

Previous owner (close friend) had the following replaced: in prior year:
Anti-Lock Braking Controller
PNP Switch
Battery
Radiator

On the first of July I replaced a Burnt Exhaust Valve. Had the head resurfaced, pressure tested, valve job, etc...but 3,000 miles later, less than 1 mile from returning home on my morning coffee run the gasket blew (my guess, because I now have oil in the coolant, and it blows out the overflow reservoir). I heard it spouting when I pulled in the drive, and have not driven it since. I suspect the Goetze Head Gasket, or the Reinz Head bolts I used may have failed...I did every step "by the book" The Machine Shop (Parks Engine Service, Seguin) did a beautiful job: Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Car has been running smooth and strong, minimal oil consumption, 24 MPG. AC is cold, Radio works, Cruise is not presently working, but comes-and-goes, good tires, sunroof works fine, no leaks. Sylvania Silverlight headlights (no hazing), European Volvo front fender side markers that blink with the Turn Signals. Passenger rear window does not work (stays shut), power seats work fine, including heat (haven't used that one in Texas!)
I need another vehicle, so it is with much regret that I offer the "R" up for sale. Be happy to answer any questions, and you are welcome to come look at it...but no driving with it in this condition! I am in my 70's, and just don't have the mental energy to go back and re-do the head again!

Forensically that can sometimes be determined. If the bulb broke but the filament is still intact that would point to the lights having been off at the time of the collision.

So sorry about your car. I know I'd feel very sad too, but she did her job in protecting you. Good luck with your next Volvo.

Thanks,

Some junk yards offer $500.
Too bad nobody lives nearby to grab the whole thing, I rather transfer this whole thing to people who can value it. The engine/trans alone is worth some $600-$1000, or whatever it is.
This engine/trans has only 120K on it. Still has a long way to go.
Anyway, I'd probably sell this to a junkyard this weekend.

I would strongly lean towards a 1998 S70, having owned both a 2007 S60 and 1998 S70. I just have the feeling the simplicity of the S70 will dominate those early model year S60s in terms of reliability. Granted my S60 has been flawless thus far, but my S70 proved a very reliable workhorse over a much longer time period for me. The S70 is also that much easier to work on and for your kids to learn some basic mechanic skills.

1+,

1998 was a funny year, I got a raise (after that no more salary raise for 14 years haha), so we went out and bought the 98 V70 as family wagon. Only after some 10 years I realized that I lucked out that I bought the 98 V70 instead of 99 V70 as 1999-2002 models had ETM issues etc. etc.
So somehow I am hooked to 1998 (1997 is fine too).

I've owned the clone of your wagon for almost a year now in a 2000 na model with 5 speed auto (same colour) and I couldn't be happier. I bought it for $875 with 168k miles needing a master cylinder, tires and suspected trans failure. A B4 servo cover, new synthetic oil and reflashing to remove stop neutral and now the trans gets better by the day. The motor burns NO oil at all, well it may take 1 quart in 6,000 miles. I believe it may have had reco head and PCV done prior to purchase as no smoke or pressure at all.

Yes we had ETM failure but a new sensor for $130 fixed that for good. Recently the regulator failed which cost me $55 and about 1 hour of time.

If you look for a na '99 you'll end up with a 4 speed which is the better deal, though the 5 speed on the 2000 feels very peppy to drive.

What I'm saying is never say never to the later 1999-2000 series as with your skills and this forum you can achieve great things.

I add my sympathies to the chorus, cn90. I also believe that if you are clear about what you want, stay attentive to what's out there and be patient, it (or something better) will become yours.
Best wishes.
