is this JB Weld or a factory thing-ignition tumbler

Post by rswaty »

Hi folks,
While preparing to replace my ignition tumbler, I discovered this grey "stuff" smeared on various spots within the steering column. Should I be worried? It does look like I'll have to grind to get the tumbler out as this JB Weld looking stuff is on the tumbler assembly. Perhaps it's just to make tampering evident?

I've never posted pictures before so I hope this works.
Thanks,
Randy

I've not seen it before but I think the only time I had a 70 series collar off of the steering column was to change the electrical portion of the ignition switch and I really didn't pay any attention to the other side.

We have a couple of writeups in the repair database with good pictures, take a look at those to see if they encountered something similar.

Perhaps the P.O. tried to glue together a broken clockspring.
Does your horn work?
Also your turn signal, does it cancel when you return the SW to neutral position?

Yes, the SRS contact reel has been fixed. They crack from age and if it has to be removed for some reason at 10 years of age or older then it is almost a certainty that the screw "ears" will fall apart from gently loosening the screws.
JB Weld is your friend on aging cars. JB Weld and paint stir sticks will do WONDERS for 850/x70 cracking dashes.
Looks like a righteous repair to avoid spending 20% of the car's value for cracked plastic.
