Fifth gear & Overdrive???

I have a 2001 xc70 with geartronic...my question revolves around this:

Occasionally when at cruising highway speed in 5th gear (automatic setting) if I go to accelerate, I notice a definite change in rpms, almost like it is changing gears....but if I bump the stick over into "manual" mode to check which gear it is in, it still reads as in 5th. What gives? Is 5th gear also acted upon electronically to lower RPMs when cruising and not accelerating?

Maybe I am answering my own question here, but is this the torque converter unlocking to accelerate?
