I pulled apart an ETM that had been sent to me by an eBay seller who had already replaced his ETM and this one was surplus. As you can see from the photo somebody had given it a good wash, probably with water based degreaser (you know, the $2.50/ can or 5 for $10 variety)
The resistance film is covered in gunk. Please use a good carby cleaner based on pure solvent and clean the bore with the plate axis in a horizontal position. First clean the lower half, then turn upside down and clean the other half. This prevents dirt and residue from seeping down past the shaft seals and into the end caps. Also keep ANY solvent away from the end caps. The design of the Magnetti Marelli ETM does allow liquids to enter if you are not totally careful.
The electronic board inside is looking for particular readings from the sensors and if they're compromised by liquid/water or dirt the board will be damaged.
My advice is to CLEAN ONLY THE THROTTLE BORE.

And yet another yellow stickered '04 build ETM that I managed to save after one or many over zealous soakings with water and/or engine cleaner. The film was so badly corroded that it had no continuity where the corrosion had eaten it away, (this is shown in the attached photo where the film contact looks brown) even though the black carbon section was like new. To match voltage readings for the Sacer sensor I had to install another sensor on the ETM and measure it.
