Car starts then dies...
Hey guys, have'nt posted in a while....not really any problems on my 95 850 turbo wagon...235k miles...today went to lunch drove about 3 miles, parked the car came back, went to pull out of parking spot she ran for about 10 seconds the died...still wont keep running.thinking maybe fuel pump, maf sensor?Luckily a co-worker had AAA for the tow home!I'm signing up tomorrow for AAA...i threw a P14118 code from the obd2 reader...leaning to Maf sensor?Side story, just had her pass a Mass. inspection yesterday! No problems.....they only do a safety inspection on vehicles 15 years or older.....sweet,another year of driving her!Anyway, any help would be appreciated....battery is ok,temp sensor?fuel filter?maf?
thanks Jim

That looks like an EGR code; not the reason it's not running.
Unplug the MAF sensor and then try running it.
You may also try jumpering the fuel pump relay. Pull off the plastic cover at the fuse box (couple torx screws around the edges) and then remove relay #103. Stick a paperclip in between pins 15 and 87. Any luck?
Fuel pumps either work or they don't.

Ah, a familiar problem. My '96 850 had been pretty well, parked it overnight. All set to go to the state fair and it did the exact same thing yours is doing.
I suspected the fuel pump b/c it seemed the engine was getting a little fuel but then starving out. So I changed the fuel pump (had a used one on hand).
Did the same thing.
Changed the fuel filter (had been meaning to do that for a while anyway).
Same thing.
The fuel pump primed up (I could hear it) with key on like it's supposed to, so I assumed it was okay.
Okay, problem had to be up front somewhere.
Opened the hood, and with a little inspection, found a gaping open area in the accordian hose (air box to throttle body).
Had one on hand, replaced.
Problem solved.
Hope yours is such an easy fix.
What was happening, is unmetered air was getting into the cylinders. So I assume the engine was actualy "leaning" out due to too much air for the fuel that was being called for on start-up.
btw: if you suspect a bad MAF, there's a tutorial on this site for testing it with your multi-meter.
Good luck.

Have you checked your intercooler hose in the front? Is it possible you pulled too far into a parking space and it knocked off the hose? This exact situation happened to me and it ended up being just the hose being unplugged.

no start, fuel or spark? put key in pos II and see if you get a squirt from the fuel rail. if not, as stated, try bridging the contacts as above to check for bad fuel relay. if not the problem, then think about the cam pos sensor. IAC is involved with idle, and does not cause no start.patrioty3k wrote:Put in new battery same result, will check all the hoses for sure, the IAC buzzes for about 30 seconds after i turn off the key, this normal?guess i never paid much attention to it,also going to clean the iac after work...thanks
