Has anyone tried this stuff from Athens, Greece?

Huh... those ebay covers look like a pretty nice option. I'm also interested in hearing if anybody has them.

Another alternative - is it tough to remove the factory skin from, for example, a junkyard seat to transplant onto another seat?

You use the whole seat from the junkyard like these. All the seats in my car are from three different year 850s. I was busy, and lucky to find them all within a couple month period.
All bucket seats at the yards I go to are $43.00. Powered or not. I opted for tan leather powered myself. All the back seat parts were dirt cheap as well, so I replaced them all.

I really like the "Elwood Industry" option but boy, they are expensive!

They are pricey. Bob does it as a hobby more than a business so fellow enthusiasts can keep their old Volvos on the road. As I understand it, based on a phone conversation with him, he hand fabricates each kit when it is ordered. He does not have a ready inventory on hand. I blinked a few times before I splashed the cash, but I would say the quality of the kit is reflected in the price.

I am leaning toward the "Greek" way. The ebay listing is $140 + $10 shipping for 2 front covers.
To be shipped from Athens Greece.
Still debating myself.

Let us know if you go that route and how it works out for you. I've got a 99 that needs new seat covers.

Just installed 2 seat bottoms in my 1996 850. All I can say is awesome. It took me about 4 hrs total to install and I"m very pleased with the outcome. Not hard to install, just take your time. They fit like leather gloves. Would recommend Elwood Volvo seat covers to anyone with worn out leather seats. I'm sure in about a year or so I will be ordering the seat backs also.

Nice thread. I have stitching undone on my drivers seat on my 1999 T5 - Im wondering if I do the labour and take the skin off, have it restitched and put it back on - is that doable for the intermediate level abled mechanic??

If you are careful and patient it may well be. I considered it but found it difficult, if not impossible, to find a pair of hog ring pliers locally and actually suggested to Bob of Elwood Industries to consider including a pair in his seat kits as a service to his customers.
