i've been reading and rereading everything in this forum about this sucker and keep coming up with nothing concrete
one day the car works it's normal old self and the next exactly nothing
OBD II comes up with P0120
bad TPS
changed that
cranks along just fine
won't catch
up arrow of death
heading out now to start checking all the other sensors
all the fuses are good
fuel pump runs up when i turn the key
no spark
yes fuel pressure at rail
will advise
95 850 OBD code 0120 sudden death

Unplug the MAF and give it a try.
It worked for me - although I had to change the MAF to keep it running.

Check the connection. As she gets older, the connection could corrode, or get greased up.

With a crank and no spark condition I would look at the cam position sensor. It can go bad and not throw a code if it dies suddenly with the car not running.
Is the up arrow flashing? That is curious that you have a no start condition combined with the up arrow. That suggests a problem B+ line, the ignition switch, or a bad secondary ground. Are there any other strange electrical behaviors like the radio or interior lights?

sorry for the delay in responding
so far i've changed the TPS and now the coil
TPS because that is what the code suggested
and the coil b/c it wasn't giving the correct readings when i bench tested it for resistance ect
and it was showing signs of arcing around the main coil body
i've pulled apart a bunch of connectors and cleaned them
the cam position sensor is getting bathed in oil regularly
(oil comes out of the filler cap, hoping a new cap and ring will fix that)
is there any way to test to see if it's still any good?
tired of spending $$ on parts that aren't the issue
if i'm following the codes i'm reading here correctly:
MAF is mass air flow sensor attached to the air box
Cam Position sensor is at the rear driver side of engine
i've had concerns about that before but the cost kept me from changing it
That suggests a problem B+ line,
B+ line?
i don't follow you there
but yes
there were some very strange electrical goings on
the dash lights were dimming when the windshield wipers were at full extension but would brighten back up when they returned to the grill only to dim again when they went up
what you thinking?
as for the PNP
isn't that more to do with gears?
it seems to shift just fine
and thanks to the tutorial here Pnp removal cleaning
i'm not sure i want to go that far just yet

The B+ line is the secondary battery line that branches off of the main battery cable and runs to the fuse box. You need to remove the cover over the fuse box to get to the connection at the fuse box end. Many times that fuse box connection will overheat, it will be fairly obvious by a visual inspection.

i haven't been down into the fuse box for a while
i'll go back in once it stops raining
it didn't look bad
is it possible that the oil coming out of the top of the engine could have fouled the CPS?
if that is the case then could a thorough cleaning solve it?
when i go into the fuse box i'll pull that and try cleaning it

sounds like your pcv system is ready for overhaul. if there is oil all over the CPS then the crankcase pressure is probably blowing oil by the cam seal behind the CPS. if the PCV system is blocked, a new oil cap and ring will just compound the problem at the cam seal. check you alternator as well. the dimming lights could be a sign of weak or failing alternator.

went unto the fuse box
well
gutted the thing really
found a burned wire
ended up pulling the whole box apart and lifting it part way out of the car
had to disconnect all of the relays to do it
inside under the dash and outside
the wire was melted into a bunch of other wires
pealed it away from all of them, extracted it from the spaghetti in the box and tracked it out
turns out to be the main power feed to the windshield wipers
not 100% sure of whether the burnt wire corrupted any of the wires along the way
they looked ok for the most part
ok enough to not need to replace them but there is always a chance that the burned one was grounding into them in some fashion
put it all back together and now pretty much all of the dash warning lights are on
still won't start
but the good thing is that the up arrow isn't flashing
that's good
isn't it?
the PCV system will simply have to wait for now
tried for a minute to go after the CPS
it is NOT held in place with regular allen bolts
more of those damn star head ones
gotta go get a set of them before i can proceed with that line of inquiry
harumph
