Hey
This is my first question here, but you seem like a very knowledgeable gang and so I'm figuring this will be a REAL soft ball.
I have a 99 V70glt (with the low pressure turbo) that I'd like to sneak a few more foot pounds and ponies out of, and was wondering if a K&N air filter would be helpful.
I have had two cars in the past, one a mid 80s Buick Bomber, and another a '90 240DL Estate. The K&N filter made a HUGE difference in the 85 Buick, but didn't seem to do anything other than hinder my emissions inspections in the 240.
I was hoping that I'd get the heads up on if a filter would be a wise investment.
Thanks guys!

K&N in both of our cars...guess it adds 2~3 HP's and a slight bit better gas mileage.

I run the K&N for its ability to be cleaned and re-used. I can't tell by my seat of the pants dyno meter if I have any extra power on my cars (except for 1) but I have used a dyno on my motorcycles. On the high performance Sportster there is a 2.5 hp difference between the paper filter and the K&N. On my Electra Glide it is a flat 3 hp difference.
I have not noticed an improved gas mileage just due to just the air filter. No difference on the 96 850 or the 05 Lexus ES330 - neither of these have any performance mods. On my 99 F150 I have added e-fans, chip, cat-back exhaust, and a cold air induction - these have netted a 2 MPG increase with all of these together, plus a more responsive throttle. The 89 Porsche 944T has a larger turbo, alcohol injection, tuned exhaust, worked heads, Cams, and cold air induction - gas mileage dropped about 4 MPG but it will go 0 to 100 in the low 12's
The big plus I see is that the K&N does flow more air when it is not full of dirt and being a cheap old man the washable feature works also.

Thanks for the lowdown, I don't know if it's worth it for an extra pair of horses...
Guess I'll toss the cash toward doing something serious, or maybe just getting it a REALLY nice detailing... it likes those

I always pop mine out at oil change and give it a good wash, that way I'm sure it will be clean. Probably a bit excessive but its better for me to be safe. I used to fiddle with 80's jap beaters and most times I'd find the air filter completely blocked. I still have nightmares. Plus K&N's come with a cool sticker.

When I wash mine I let it dry over-night. If I have to go somewhere while it's being "serviced" I pop an oem (which I have laying around the garage) air filter back in. Btw, due to supposed MAF failures, I only spray oil on the underside of the filter. Figure the upper side is over-kill anyway.

Great tip, I should have a spare paper filter handy when cleaning the K&N...
