Yes and no. Some can and some can't. Best way to find out is simply fit it to the loom first without plumbing it in.

If after replugging the unit back into the loom once with ignition off the unit begins to respond to the pedal by changing the angle of the throttle plate you should be fine to install totally.

NA throttle bodies respond to throttle input with the engine off - Turbo throttle bodies do not!

An ETM from an NA car can be fitted to another NA car, and Turbo to Turbo. You cannot swap between NA to Turbo or vice versa.

Currently running an S80 T6 ETM on my '99 S70 Turbo right now.

Burnout I disagree. I repair ETMs here in Australia. I test all sorts of throttle bodies with my NA 2000 V70 and have no problems operating them with the pedal; the flap responds fine regardless of which car it was sourced from. I can perform angle tests using Vida and each and every ETM I plug into this car responds. Sometimes a hot plugging is required to start the ETM. This is when you turn off ignition, leave the battery connected and replug the ETM back into the loom.

I was running a USA sourced S80T6s ETM in my NA '99 V70 (before it was written off) and it didn't require any programming at all. Even the power save feature engaged after 12 secs of ignition on position II (with engine off)

However recently I repaired a XC70 '01 and it wouldn't power save until it was back in the original car. I'm not saying they can all be interchanged with no problems but they do respond to the pedal angle (at least on my vehicle). Interchangability is more to do with software versions that the vehicle was programmed with at the dealer. In 2006 the latest s/w for ETMs was released. There may be 2 or 3 different releases along the way to 2006.

To further add to this post had a 2000 S70 2.5T ETM come in and it was the first ETM that wouldn't respond to pedal input with the engine OFF.

However while it was plugged into my car's harness I started the engine (with my own car's ETM still plumbed in but not connected) and the S70 2.5T ETM responded to pedal input.

These Volvos are strange creatures but thus feature allows you to test used ETMs without going to the 2 hour ordeal of plumbing it in.

This is what I've tested so far:

It seems the turbo P80 ETMs can go straight into the P2 series turbo cars as long as both are auto and vice-versa

P2 series NA cars have totally different programming to all other ETM cars and actually use a different ETM part number

However you can't place a P80 V70 NA '00 5 Speed ETM into a V70 NA '99 4 speed and probably vice versa

The S80T6s ETMs seem to be able to go straight into a '99NA 4 speed (had one in my own '99 NA 4 speed auto, though it was sent from an unknown source and it was more likely a non-turbo S80 it was derived from)

A V70 '00 NA 5 speed auto will not go into a S80 6 cylinder NA

Snap-On's new scanner doesn't contain any programming for the S80 sixes (or 5s) for the ETM
Autoland Scientech's scanners (Vedis II and iScan II) also don't have the menus for ETM intitialisation on S80s
Don't even know if the 2 brands above can reprogram them once they are already programmed to another car

One of my recent customers with a S80 non turbo had to purchase a new ETM and the dealer here in Western region Geelong raped him to the tune of $350 including fitting (which takes around 25 mins to fit and a further 20 mins to program)

The dealer says that reprogramming is possible but not guaranteed. They may be talking about not being able to program faulty ETMs to another car but they don't even know if it's faulty unless it's scanned in the original car first.

Ok finaly got around to test it. It was put on 2.4T 2001 Aut. works great much better than the old one, great throttle response etc, but after driving 70miles the light came on again, with throttle position 2 i think it was and had one with cam postion and knock sensors, i belive this is all related to this throttle body so Monday i will try to reprogram it with ETM Reprogram if this dosent work i will try the ECM Reprogram this works with the ABS moduls on the S40 and V50 models if you use an used modul
