Good engine cleaner....mess to clean up

Post by nzvlnr »

My s70 blew the hose that connects to the engine block from the oil trap ( parts on order) and I now have to clean a bloody mess......
Can someone reccomend a good degreaser that will not damage the rubber seals, wires or anything else on the front of the block? Thx!!

Just about any will do. I like Gunk but just about all of them work fine.

I pretty much head to AutoZone and grab the cheapest can of engine cleaner. I may have bought two cans when I first got around to cleaning just to be sure, but one should do fine if you have a cleaning schedule.

Fix the broken hose first, then Castrol Purple Cleaner, then gentle amount of warm water.

Again, you don't want water to enter the engine, so fix all broken parts first.

Purple Power cleaner... It even will clean the charcoal colored plastic trim on the car.

Best bet is purchasing a can of engine degreaser at an auto parts store and going to a self serve car wash. Just before going in spray down the engine compartment and leave it running while you hose down the engine. Keep the wand a few feet away at all times and have the engine running. Works great.

I use simple green for all of my degreasing jobs now. Its bio-degradeable( or supposed to be) and smells good, too.

If you do the car was hose thing, try to make sure you do it with the car/motor cool or cold. If the engine is at temp, the cleaner may dry before you rinse it off and cause staining.

Do not spray the distributor or much over the spark plug cover. I'm surprised how easy it is for water to get into the spark plug holes.
